about

Lance: I wrote I Doubt 3 days after Lido Pimienta came to Halifax and performed at the Halifax Pop Explosion. Aquakultre performed the next night the same stage at the festival aswell. There was a lot of politics behind the Lido Pimienta show. She asks if POC women, brown women, people of different abilities, could come to the front of the stage. One individual didn't want to move from a position directly at the front to accommodate those that had come forth and a national media storm occurred where a lot of racism and racial discussion was provoked, and... it was wild, it really sucked. It took a while to digest and when it finally did, a few lines in my head started to manifest. “Cause i’m proud/ just control the crowd and we got it”. This line was a testament to myself, because at the time performing terrified me, and to watch someone bless a stage so confidently, and control a crowd so seamlessly, it was inspiring for sure. Sometimes all it takes is a moment in time, or someone else's' experience that sparks my writing, and once those two lines had come to mind, everything else just fit together like glue.

As an artist and a songwriter who has been given an opportunity and platform, I always intend to share my truth. I like to give people a little piece of me with every song. I Doubt It is giving people an insight, an understanding of the other side of the game. My experiences come from living a life that I chose to live. Selling drugs, skipping school, hanging out with my homies until 3am, robbing, and stealing. You name it, I've done it. This song was sparked by Lido, but written through my experience. When I do present my art and music, it’s mostly to people who have never experienced what I have been through. This song is a representation of the oppressed perspective, so if you just don’t “know”, then I doubt you’ll ever understand where I’m coming from.

We recorded the song during a 7 day residency at the National Music Centre in Calgary thanks to our 2018 CBC Searchlight win. We CAN NOT thank CBC enough for picking us. Nick Dourado brought up some beautiful chords on this amazing 1917 Steinway Model 0 piano, and we came up with the arrangements on the spot. Jeremy Costello knew exactly where to go on the bassline, manifesting Erykah Badu’s Other Side Of The Game. Nathan Doucet got to playing a 1965 Ludwig 4 piece drum set, that sound amazing and huge. We had a lot of fun recording this music, and what more fun to do it with your best buds. Super excited to share with the world and see where it takes us. Special shout out to Lido Pimienta for being an amazing human being.

lyrics

Wait a minute
Capitalism and prison systems I can’t tell the difference Meanwhile
I’m to busy bigging up my people encouraging them to speak loud We the leaders of the leaders
Marsha Ambrosius, the Floetry Jill Scott, so golden
And I’m happy you here now
You can tell your grandchild
You made love to this, how they here now

Cuz Im proud, just control the crowd and we got it I’m sharing with you the things that I found, You claiming that you understand, but I doubt it I doubt it
I doubt

Alright let me check that, hmm ya
Jesus Christ, societal pressure they got us grieving for life I can still hear them reading my rights
Carding me ‘cause my skin ain’t white, huh
This is that Beverly Glenn Copeland
How’d I get this far, patience
The backbone to our families
Fighting for whoever needing a hand cuz the plan is to

To show them im proud
Just control the crowd and we got it
I’m sharing with you the things that I found You claiming though you understand but I doubt it I doubt it
I doubt it

I’m too used to being violent
Band of brothers, a code of silence
Just tryna get outta that was a challenge
It takes two to tango I can’t blame it on my surroundings Doubt
That I wouldn’t change a thing if you reroute it
All I know is if you keep the conversation going And address what needs to be addressed
To the press and never stress

Because you gotta stay proud
Just control the crowd and we got it
I’m sharing with you the things that I found
You claiming though you understand. but we doubt it Baby we doubt it
Baby we doubt it
Baby we doubt it
We Doubt it
We Doubt it
